How can I find and keep my motivation?

Learn how to find your motivation in life and how to keep it, even when it’s most challenging.

  • Why do we choose to do things we don’t love and don’t want in our lives?
  • How can we not do things superficially, wait for the day to pass quickly, and then start over?
  • Why do we live like robots who have to do this and that without putting heart?
  • Where is the motivation to live life the way we should?

FEELINGS move our life!

I wrote this article for those who want to know how to find their motivation, no matter how they lost it.

The steps in finding our motivation are:

  1. Know yourself.
  2. Get to know what you do better.
  3. Get rid of procrastination.

Let’s explore these steps together.

1. Know yourself to discover what motivates you.

Often we lose motivation because we have lost touch with ourselves. We get stuck in our daily routines and forget why we do these things. Then we start, instead of telling ourselves the real reasons behind the action, that we are doing that thing “because we have to.”

And when the MUST occurs, the motivation disappears. Everything we do becomes something imposed by an authority we have no power over. We feel pressure and feel that things don’t make sense.

But, behind every action is motivation; when we discover it, we can love what we do more or give up things we no longer want.

How do we find motivation by knowing ourselves?

Try to find the answer to these questions:

  • Find out what qualities and flaws you have.
  • Discover what you like to talk about.
  • What do you want to learn about?
  • Where is your passion, what do you like to do?
  • What is your personal goal?
  • Why do you think you were born?
  • What do you want to leave behind when you die?

If your life has been full of obstacles, rewrite your personal story. Write down what you want for the future and who you want to become.

How do you repay yourself for your efforts?

Learn to take care of yourself. Because when you do this, you begin to love yourself and simultaneously rediscover your motivation.

Take responsibility for your actions. When you recognize that your happiness and unhappiness depend only on you, you also have control over your motivation.

Find out what works for you as a motivator. Are activities with loved ones, gifts, or verbal encouragement, what motivates you? Find out what works for you and do that more.

Remember where you started and where you are now. It’s easy to get demoralized when you feel you haven’t evolved. Although we do many things in our lives, we can forget how hard it was initially. That’s why it’s helpful to remind ourselves of our evolution and be grateful for our chosen path. That way, we can realize that nothing we do is in vain.

What is it that demotivates you? When you discover this, you can start thinking about how to anticipate or avoid people and situations that demoralize you.

How else would I act when I do what I want to do? This question can help you to have more clarity in the actions you need to take. It will give you confidence in your strengths because things will no longer remain a mystery. And at the same time, it will influence you to take action, which is why motivation exists in our lives.

2. Get to know what you do better to discover new sources of motivation.

We can find encouragement when we learn more about what we do. Below is a list of things that will help you discover more about what you want.

Why do you do what you do?

What are the consequences of doing or not doing it?

This purpose of what you do can come from the tasks you take on and how you create your “ideal portrait” (how you want to be seen and what you want to leave behind).

You probably had a teacher at some point who was so infatuated with what he or she was teaching that you started learning for the sake of that teacher. That shows how important it is to love what you do.

When you realize that what you do impacts you, your attitude can inspire others to be as passionate as you are.

It doesn’t all change every day. Another thing that can make you find motivation in what you do is to feel that you have some control over your life and your actions. And at the same time, push comes when your work offers surprises and opportunities to grow.

You need to know your needs to determine if the work or relationship you seek can give you motivation. When you feel that you are getting what you want, your commitment increases, and so does your motivation.

3. Get rid of procrastination to motivate yourself.

It doesn’t work the attitude “first comes motivation, and then you are more focused on the work.” Sometimes to find motivation, you need to act like you are motivated. “Fake it till you make it.”

Below is a list of things you can do to eliminate procrastination.

  • Find a support group. Whether it’s people who want the same thing you do or who have been through what you’re going through, a support group will give you the reassurance you need. When you want a change on something, you need clarification.
  • Connect with a mentor. An experienced person can give you more inside information about what to expect. And they can give you methods they have already used to make some things more manageable.
  • Stay focused on your goals. No matter what is happening around you, you can find the motivation to do what you want when you want something and stay focused on it.
  • Five-minute rule. You know the saying: “the fun comes from doing”? When you don’t feel like doing something, focus on doing something for at least 5 minutes without anyone interrupting you. Then start increasing the time you focus on just what you have to do. In time, you’ll be able to concentrate more on one activity. However, remember to take breaks.
  • Pomodoro rule. This rule is similar to the Five Minute Rule. Only we set a specific time here. We do the activity for twenty-five minutes and rest for five minutes. Times do not increase or decrease. We keep these intervals constant to get used to a specific time to do an activity. The point is that when we don’t alternate activities with breaks and the work or break time increases, we get tired or lazy doing things. We also need breaks to regain our energy and motivation. At the same time, long and frequent breaks are not the key to great success.
  • Books, movies, courses, and motivational quotes. There is a whole motivation industry, yet many people need help. Telling ourselves in the mirror that we can do things and get stuck leads to procrastination. We need to involve the action behind the words. Just talking about inspiration doesn’t mean you’re motivated. But when you do integrate what you say, you are genuinely motivated.
  • Simplify the steps you have to take. You need to take action quickly and keep your life simple. Learn to prioritize and make clear decisions because your quick activities will motivate you to keep doing that. If you want to know how to make decisions faster, I recommend the article How to make decisions.
  • Learn to be patient. Sometimes we lose motivation because we need more patience to wait for the result that confirms what we are doing is right. When you do something for the first time, you have yet to determine how long it will take to get the desired result. That’s why I recommend that for what you are doing, you keep working and wait longer before making a final decision to give up. The bamboo tree takes 5 years for the seed to come out of the ground and grow. Growing a tree over twenty-seven meters tall takes five years of care. So don’t worry if things are slow. The important thing is to progress, not to get there as quickly as possible.

Trouble concentrating?

How do we solve them?

A lot of concentration problems can be eliminated just by keeping an organized place, removing distractions, reducing the number of things you have to decide, learning to take breaks, and giving yourself time to catch up.

How do you find motivation on bad days?

You often find inspiration by starting to do the things you keep avoiding. Find inspiration by walking or finding people with the same activities as you and learn how they cope. Then, recognize that you can have a different level of motivation to do something every day. And for those bad days, you can recover your strength.

Reduce time from thinking to action. Most fears we have about what to do or how to act are unfounded. People are selfish, thinking about what they have to do, what they feel, and what they want. And what you do will not, as you imagine, come under the critical eye of other people. Because we care more about ourselves than about others around us.

Choose to do rather than regret not doing. If that could be your motto in life, you could decide much easier what you want. And you would do a lot more exciting things. Because, in the end, the regrets a man has are not about what he did but about what he didn’t do.

Make a fixed schedule for sleep, sport, and nutrition. Whether we want to believe it or not, our motivation is influenced by our state of mind. If we don’t feel good, then we don’t have the motivation to do something either.

These were the three steps to finding our motivation. I hope you found the article helpful.

If you like it, you can share it with your friends to let them know these steps too.
